Mural for Eastmont Intermediate School

In 2010 My student teaching commitment culminated with a middle school mural project. Student teachers are required to teach on a volunteer basis for 6 months in order to obtain a credential. My commitment lasted one school year. In collaboration with Eastmont Intermediate students, I guided and asked students to draw themselves in the careers of their choice. I enlarged and collaged their drawings to create a composition of their vision for the future.

We learned about Chicano/a Muralism y Los Tres Grandes of the Mexican Mural Movement. We prepared the walls, transferred the final drawing and painted the indoor surface when time allowed.

For the unveiling the students and Ms. Liggins, my master teacher, celebrated the reveal of the final work.

It was a pleasure and an honor working with students in this way. The best part was working with students, mentoring and sharing ideas and dreams for a better world.
